How I Fell Down the Ubuntu Touch Rabbit Hole

I’ve been an Ubuntu user for years, but this month I actually started contributing to it. Back in February, Canonical put out a call for community developers to help build the core apps for the newly announced Ubuntu Phone — apparently over 1,500 people expressed interest. The Touch/CoreApps wiki page has been the entry point since: pick an app, join its team, get involved.

I picked the Calculator app. It’s small enough to actually understand end to end, which felt like the right place to start. I’m working alongside Riccardo Padovani in Italy and a few others scattered across timezones — we’re on IRC most mornings in #ubuntu-phone on Freenode, picking off bugs one at a time.

It didn’t feel like a big decision when I filed my first bug. But three weeks in, I’m showing up every day now, and it’s starting to feel less like tinkering and more like a project I actually care about finishing properly.
